How to Clean Your Air Filter at Home

Just like doing the dishes or taking out the trash, cleaning your air filter should be on your routine housekeeping list. Without the help of a properly functioning air filtration system, dirty units can make you more susceptible to breathing air that is full of dangerous particles. Cleaning and maintaining your air filter is a simple task.

Where is the Air Filter?

Unless you are air filtration experts like us at Brookaire, you may not know where your home’s air filter is located or how to identify it. Typically, the air filter the return vent. It is common to have more multiple return vents in your filtration system and it is important to clean all of them.

To Clean or to Replace?

Not all air filtration systems are created equal. Depending on the type and quality of your system, some filters will need routine cleanings while others are designed to be replaced often. Note that most disposable air filters can be identified by having a cardboard frame. However, if you do not know for sure, give our air filter experts a call!

How to Clean an Air Filter

Cleaning your air filter is a simple process that will only take you a few minutes. We highly recommend cleaning your filter outside or over a trash can to minimize the need for further cleanup.

Items you will need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Ladder/stool (optional)
  • Cleaning brush
  • Vacuum with extending hose
  • Hose or running water
  • Cleaning gloves (optional)


  1. Open the vent. They may be a screw to remove or a closure flap to release. Use your ladder or stool if necessary.
  2. Remove the dirty air filter. Use your cleaning brush to remove the debris.
  3. Use your vacuum hose to thoroughly remove stubborn debris.
  4. Now, run water through your hose through the filter from the backend or the opposite direction of airflow. Let the filter to dry thoroughly before reinstalling.

How to Replace an Air Filter

If you are simply replacing your dirty air filter, you can follow the majority of the steps above, too. Instead of taking the time to clean your air filter though, just dispose of your filter and install the new one. If you do not know what size of filter your system needs, the dimensions can be found on the frame of the dirty filter. In case the numbers are hard to read or cannot be found, measure your air filter.
